ECU Alumnus receives Medal of the Order of Australia
ECU Masters in Sports Medicine Alumnus, Dr Cam Webber, has received a Medal for the Order of Australia in the 2008 Australian Honours List for service to medicine, education and fundraising.
Dr Webber's career has spanned over a quarter of a century and includes many achievements in his chosen field of medicine.
In addition to general practice, teaching and fundraising commitments, Dr Webber is actively involved in sports; gaining a Masters in Sports Medicine from Edith Cowan University in 1999. He is involved with local sporting teams including the ACT Brumbies, the Canberra Raiders and has worked as a medical officer at the Sydney Olympics, as well as being a member of the Ethics Committee of the Australian Institute of Sport since 2000.
Exclusive accreditation for exercise and sports science
ECU’s Exercise and Sports Science undergraduate course has been accredited by the Australian Association for Exercise and Sports Science (AAESS).
It is now one of only three courses to gain full accreditation nationally by AAESS and is currently the only accredited course in Western Australia.
Students completing a Sports Science program at ECU have the option of doing a fourth year in rehabilitation. With this additional year of study you will qualify with a Bachelor of Science (Exercise and Rehabilitation), gaining accreditation as an ‘Exercise Physiologist’ through the AAESS.
ECU researcher on top of the world
ECU’s Associate Professor Paul Laursen in conjunction with other ECU researchers, the University of British Columbia and the Mountain Medicine Society of Nepal, has been monitoring trekkers in the Mount Everest region of Nepal.
Their aim is to determine whether experienced trekkers acclimatise more quickly than their inexperienced counterparts.
Dr Laursen says the trekkers are being fitted with blood oxygen sensors generously supplied by Vivometrics®. Dr Laursen says the project was initiated after it was observed that experienced trekkers found it easier to adapt to altitude following recent altitude exposure.
"We hope this study will prove whether or not the body can ‘remember’ its adaptations and acclimatise faster during subsequent exposure," says Dr Laursen.
