Biology, Chemistry & Environmental Science

Our Biology, Chemistry & Environmental Science disciplines leave other universities green with envy.

We offer a range of highly ranked degrees that can lead to decidedly different careers in fields such as biological sciences, environmental management, chemistry, environmental forensics, health and more.

Chemistry Educator of the Year award winner

Chemistry lecturer, Dr Magdalena Wajrak, was awarded the Pearson Education RACI (Royal Australian Chemical Institute) Chemistry Educator of the Year Award.

State-of-the-art facilities

Biology, Chemistry & Environmental Science students and researchers have access to the latest facilities and equipment in the University's state-of-the-art, award-winning Science and Health building.

The $28 million, ecologically-friendly building includes a range of features to reduce energy consumption by maximising the use of rainwater, solar energy and natural light. The principles of environmental science and protection are also reflected in its design.

Memorandum boosts possibilities for student research and project

We have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Bush Heritage, Australia (BHA) which will provide a myriad of potential research opportunities, possibilities for student projects and other collaboration.

BHA is a growing organisation which owns and manages four reserves in Western Australia - Charles Darwin, Eurady (Nr. Kalbarri), Kojonup and Cherininup (Nr. Bremer Bay Research Station).

Innovative partnership with the Department of Fisheries

Our Mathematics lecturers and marine biologists at the WA Department of Fisheries have been analysing the catch and effort data collected by the scallop and prawn fleets.

The spatial information is used to provide maps that delineate the actual regions where prawn and scallop fishing takes place with a view to reduce fishing on small prawns, improve the protection of spawning stock of tiger prawns and investigate methods for scallop catch prediction.

ECU lends expertise to BioGENEius Challenge

Our Biotechnology researchers are sharing their knowledge and passion for research with high school students as part of the Sanofi-aventis International BioGENEius Challenge of Western Australia, a new competition for high school students in years 8 to 12 run by the Department of Industry and Resources.
