Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT)
The Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) is a national test for mature age applicants. It is designed to assess aptitude for learning in a tertiary environment.
To be eligible for consideration to enter one of our undergraduate courses you will need to achieve the following:
- Multiple Choice - a mark of at least 115 for either component, and
- Written English - a mark of at least 145
Note:
- The score for STAT Written English and at least one component of STAT Multiple Choice will need to equate to a notional Tertiary Entrance Rank (TER) equal to or greater than the cut-off rank for the course/s being applied for.
- Courses which have a science or mathematics prerequisite require a mark of at least 145 in the Quantitative component of the STAT Multiple Choice.
- For entry into our University Preparation Courses, a minimum score of 125 in English and 115 in at least one component of the STAT Multiple Choice will be required.
Who is eligible to sit the STAT?
Anyone who is 20 years of age before 1 March in the year in which they wish to commence studies is eligible.
What does the STAT involve?
There are two sections:
- STAT Multiple Choice
An aptitude test that assesses both verbal and quantitative skills. It is a 2 hour test with 70 multiple choice questions, half of which are Humanities and Social Sciences based, and the other half are Mathematics and Science based.
- Written English
A one hour test in which the candidate is asked to write short essays on two different topics: Part A is a public affairs issue that invites argument, while Part B asks for a more personal point of view. Each section gives a choice of four topics.
Preparing
You should be able to sit the tests by simply familiarising yourself with the booklets containing sample questions that they receive at the time they book for the STAT.
If you have not recently been involved in formal study or did not complete your secondary education, you may want to consider completing a STAT preparation course in order to approach the STAT with confidence. A number of institutions offer STAT Preparation Courses either throughout the year or at peak times of demand for the STAT.
