ECU amongst top WA inventors

The WA State Government has announced that ECU's Professor Kamal Alameh (pictured right) has been named as one of 6 finalists for the 2007 WA Inventor of the Year Award.

Professor Kamal Alameh has been selected for his work into computer chip technology that increases the speed of home computers.

Called High-speed Inter-chip Optical Interconnect, this invention uses micro-lenses in a novel way to substantially increase the speed and performance of home and office computers. It facilitates higher rates of data transfer at lower cost and reduced energy consumption.

Other finalists' inventions included a vaccine bio-marker to help control the bird flu epidemic, a cost-effective video surveillance technique to increase community safety and new carbon dioxide removal technology.

The Inventor of the Year Award helps public, private and tertiary sectors to commercialise new products and services and is run by the Department of Industry and Resources. The winner of the Inventor of the Year Award will be announced in October.

Weigh to go kids

Obesity studyResearchers at ECU have found that resistance training, as well as nutrition and lifestyle change, play a significant role in overcoming childhood obesity.

ECU is offering an eight week exercise training program to children aged between 7 and 12 years, focusing on resistance weight training.

The research found that overweight children enjoy resistance exercise far more than traditional aerobic activities. With a larger body mass they are typically stronger than their peers and therefore are more likely to get positive results from this type of exercise.

Classes start on 15 October 2007 at the Joondalup campus, three times per week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 4.00pm until 5.00pm. The cost is $200.

Michael Pengelly

“ ECU helped me achieve my goal of working in the field of Environmental Science.”

“I made a decision to study Environmental Science at ECU because of a growing concern for the state of our natural environment. The course at ECU was perfect for my requirements and was supported by a team of excellent lecturers. It combined study and technical field-trips that are essential in gaining real experience. Now I am an Environmental Officer at Department of Environment and Conservation and I am working towards making a difference!”

“ECU helped me fine tune my strengths, and discover new ones.”

"I had a gift with technology from a quite young age, so in a way, I always knew I would end up in a computer science field. Why did I choose ECU? I was blown away by their lab facilities, and I really liked their progressive attitude. They took me on with a TAFE qualification and bumped me up to the second year, building on the knowledge I already had. They also opened my eyes to a heap of new areas in the computer science world. Like maths. I never had a head for figures, but with hard work and help from the dedicated staff, I managed to attain a 100% score for the unit!”

ECU Computer Science student, Michael Fazio
