ECU's MBA is a five-star performer

Edith Cowan University's MBA program is a five star performer according to the 2008 Good Universities Guide.

ECU's MBA program received the most 5 star ratings of any Western Australian university in this year's Good Universities Guide. The MBA program was awarded five stars for Corporate Links, Academic Staff Qualifications, and gender balance for the proportion of Female Teaching Staff.

ECU also scored impressive results (four stars) from our MBA graduates who rated the quality, standard and relevance of our program.

Director of Graduate Studies, Associate Professor Gary Chittick, says the rating recognises the quality of ECU's Master of Business Administration.

"ECU places a great deal of importance on developing corporate links that benefit students. We design our courses in consultation with industry and use real-world business problems to develop skills and learning," he said.

"The fact that we are the only WA university to receive five stars for corporate links and academic qualifications confirms the excellent quality of teaching we have in this program and its relevance to the corporate world."

ECU researchers on top of the world

Paul LaursenECU Associate Professor in Exercise, Biomedical and Health Sciences, Paul Laursen (pictured right), is currently researching how the body acclimatises to high altitude in the Everest region of Nepal.

The study, involving researchers from ECU, the University of British Columbia and the Mountain Medicine Society of Nepal, and in kind support from Vivometrics, will further understanding into the altitude acclimatisation process.

The project was initiated after it was observed that experienced trekkers found it easier to adapt to altitude following recent altitude exposure.

Participants are monitored at various field stations throughout the Khumbu region of Nepal, at 2600m, 3400m and 5300m of elevation. Subjects will have their cardiovascular, respiratory and metabolic function measured at rest, during sleep and during two exercise tests.

Researchers hope to investigate whether or not the body can 'remember' its adaptions and acclimatise faster during subsequent exposures to high altitude.

Any travellers from Australia that are interested in participating in the research and are planning on trekking in Nepal from October to December are encouraged to contact Paul via email p.laursen@ecu.edu.au.

ECU students triumph at the national mooting competition

ECU would like to congratulate two of their talented law students, Katie McKenzie and James Graham. The pair headed across to Melboune during the mid-semester break to compete in the annual Sir Harry Gibbs National Constitutional Law Mooting Competition. Their hard work and attention to detail paid dividends.

Katie and James walked away with one of the major prizes, the Clayton Utz Cup, for having prepared the best written submissions. James commented on the value of the legal writing workshop run by the school in equipping them with the necessary skills for writing their submissions. Katie says the competition was very challenging but was a great learning experience and is looking forward to more.

Their performance at the event demonstrated the degree of skill and effort to be expected of students in the ECU law school.

Michael Pengelly

“ ECU has given me the chance to reach for the stars - and train them too!”

“I have always been fascinated by exercise and sport science. As an athlete I know how valuable knowledge can be in the world of competitive sports. So I decided to use the course to further my own athletic performance and provide myself with a sports related career in the future. The broad range of units allowed me to experience many aspects of Sports Science, before I settled on Biomechanics. Now I’m qualified to work with the world’s finest athletes.”

ECU Sports science graduate, Jonathon Green
