Take a virtual tour of the new ECU Library

The new library at ECU's Joondalup Campus has recently opened its doors to students and the general public. The new facility is almost double the size of the old library and forms part of a central hub for students.

More than just a library, it includes the bookshop, a second Aroma Café, a new and improved megalab for 200 students plus a range of informal learning areas and meeting rooms. It has also become home to the campus IT department.

Check out the facilities of the library by taking a virtual tour at www.ecu.edu.au/KITSC/Library/31/

ECU becomes more family friendly

A new initiative established by the ECU Sport and Fitness Centre in Joondalup will help ECU staff and students balance their University commitments with caring for their children.

A crèche in the centre will be trialled during the semester terms from 8.30am to 4.00pm for casual care of children aged two months to six years old.

The cost will be $7.00 per hour per child, with 24 hours notice required for bookings. Under Government regulations the child’s parent must stay on campus and be readily available to attend to the child’s needs if contacted.

The maximum time a child can stay in the crèche is three hours per day to a maximum of 12 hours per week.

For further information on this initiative, visit www.ecu.edu.au/sport

Make money from your spare room

If you have ever considered offering a room in your home to a student, now is the ideal time to do so.

With rental demand in Perth at an all-time peak, ECU's Off Campus Housing Service is seeking rental accommodation for students.

Accommodation is generally required from the end of February through to the end of June and/or from the end of July to the end of November.

As a general guide, providing a furnished bedroom and use of the bathroom, kitchen and laundry will attract a weekly rental of $125 to $150 - a great financial incentive if you have a room that is not being used.

For more information, contact the Off Campus Housing Service on 9370 6266 for accommodation covering the Mount Lawley and Churchlands Campuses or 6304 2306 for accommodation covering the Joondalup Campus.

Rock around the clock

Juggling your fitness around two degrees is never easy, but Duncan Rock, a classical music student at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) manages just that, thanks to the convenience of having the ECU Sports and Fitness Centre on campus.

"I've been a member of the ECU Sports and Fitness Centre for more than a year now... It's great - I can be working out only minutes after getting out of class," he says.

With his demanding schedule Duncan knows the importance of remaining fit, healthy and sane!

"When I have a big performance coming up or exams looming, the best stress relief for me is to take it all out in the gym.

"I'm also keen to combat the old stereotype of the overweight opera singer... It's totally unnecessary to be overweight to sing opera - in fact it's really detrimental."

Duncan's hard work is definitely proving to pay off - he won the prestigious $35,000 Mathy Award from the Australian Singing Competition last year, as well as a scholarship to study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.

ECU Sports is located on both Joondalp and Mount Lawley Campuses and offers an exciting range of Group Fitness Classes including Yoga, Pilates, Body Combat and Boot Camp. For more information, call ECU Sports on 6304 5000 or visit www.ecu.edu.au/sport
