Unified Communications - ECU and Nortel Networks give students a head start
ECU's School of Computer and Information Science has partnered with Nortel Networks to establish a Unified Communications Laboratory. The new laboratory allows students to design, configure, implement and manage a real Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) solution, providing valuable hands-on experience.
Multimedia over Internet Protocol (IP), VoIP and internet telephony has experienced major growth over the last few years and the technology is now readily accepted. The School of Computer and Information Science has restructured the Networking course and set up the new laboratory to cater for the predicted demand for skilled graduates in this area.
Head of School, Associate Professor Craig Vallli says that the partnership with Nortel has been crucial in providing a realistic work environment for students.
"As VoIP takes hold over traditional telephony, demand for skilled graduates in this area will far outweigh supply. Nortel have provided us with a world class learning environment through the Unified Communications Laboratory," he says.

Premier Alan Carpenter visits ECU
Premier Alan Carpenter spent an hour talking with the students from the postgraduate WAAPA Broadcasting course for the second year in a row.
The Premier, who was a television political reporter and presenter before entering politics, had an informal and open discussion with the 20 students on Thursday 29 May 2008.
Mr Carpenter described how his broadcasting career began and encouraged students to aim high. He was the presenter of the ABC's The 7.30 Report before he moved into politics.
Students were invited to ask the Premier any questions, and he spoke openly on a variety of issues from the political decision-making process to the pressure a life in politics puts on his family.

Our students speak
ECU Surf Science graduate Brodie Cotter works with Surfing WA in their development and planning team organising key surfing events in WA.
"The degree gave me an insight into what is required to run a surf comp. I learned about every aspect of a competition including judging, sponsorships and beach marshalling," Brodie says.
"These days it's important to have a professional attitude and appearance. The surfing industry has changed from when it was just surfers running it. There are all kinds of people involved in the field and the industry itself is becoming more professional."
