Are you a BioGENEius?

Dr Mel ZimanECU boasts excellent researchers undertaking work in a range of areas within biotechnology. Several of these scientists will share their knowledge and passion for research with high school students as part of the Sanofi-aventis International BioGENEius Challenge of Western Australia, a new competition for high school students in years 8 to 12 that is run by the Department of Industry and Resources.

Students participating in the BioGENEius Challenge will be mentored by one of WA's world-class biotechnology scientists and conduct a year-long research project in the field of biotechnology. Each year, WA's top two BioGENEius students will compete in the International BioGENEius Challenge held in the USA .

Dr Mel Ziman (pictured top right with her research team) from the Faculty of Computing, Health & Science, together with postgraduate students, researchers, ECU Alumni and Office of Research and Innovation, have formed an ECU Melanoma Foundation for the study of Melanoma and the development of a diagnostic and prognostic test. Pauline Zaenker, a bright and enthusiastic budding young scientist from Ocean Reef High School has joined the research team as part of the BioGENEius Challenge.

BioGENEius student nominations close on 14 March 2008. For more information on the BioGENEius Challenge, go to www.doir.wa.gov.au/bioGENEius

Alexander Watson

“I now work for The Wilderness Society
helping to protect, promote and restore
Australia’s Wild Country.”

“From the moment I began my PhD in Environmental Management at ECU I was
impressed by the energy generated by lecturers and fellow students. It had the feel of a young place, brimming with intelligent people wanting to make a difference. I believe ECU’s enthusiasm for innovative science rubbed off on me, and since completing my studies I have managed to secure incredible jobs in Canada and now Australia. Not only do my employers appreciate my expertise in the environment, they also utilise my knowledge of how the environment is managed.”

ECU Environmental Management graduate, Dr Alexander Watson
