Dancing feet show steps to fellowship
Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) graduate Rhiannon Newton will be dancing her way around the world, thanks to a $10,000 fellowship from the Department of Culture and the Arts (DCA).
The 20-year-old Bachelor of Arts (Dance) graduate was one of five recipients awarded a Young People and the Arts Fellowship by the DCA to help achieve her dream of becoming a professional dancer.
Rhiannon will take professional placements across a range of Australian Dance companies, including: Chunky Move (Melbourne); Dance North (Townsville); and Tasdance (Launceston).
The grant will also fund her participation in a series of workshops and master classes at the Sydney Festival, Singapore Arts Festival and Impulstanz - a major contemporary dance festival in Vienna .
Rhiannon believes that gaining international experience will help her stand out in a very competitive market.
"As a graduate student you're in a really difficult position to break into the industry, so it becomes really important to get out into the wider community, expand your knowledge, get exposure and define where you best fit in the industry."
Funding for artistic projects (excluding film, television and radio) is also available through the Department of Culture and the Arts' Young People and the Arts Panel. There are three deadlines per year, with the next one closing on 23 February 2007. The fellowship round closes on 21 September 2007.
