Field trip takes tourism students to Borneo

Twenty students from ECU took part in the field trip of a life-time, spending ten days in Sabah, Borneo as part of their final year studies for a degree in Tourism. The students were led by ECU's Foundation Professor of Tourism, Ross Dowling. Professor Dowling was so impressed by Sabah as a world class ecotourism destination that he brought the students to Borneo to see for themselves the five-star eco and cultural attractions of the state.

The students were in Sabah not only to learn about the natural and cultural conditions, but also to contibute to it. The group was escorted by Mr Albert Teo, owner of Borneo Eco Tours and a leader in the field of tourism.

"The trip to Borneo was the best experience I have had at university. I especially enjoyed the Sakau Rainforest Lodge as it was a wonderful example of eco-principles put into practice. This experience has really enabled me to identify what I want in a career like no classroom theory has been able to do," says Vanessa Swinton, one of the students on the trip.

Claire's new challenge

Claire Griffin is on a new path to success. After completing several units in ECU's Teachers Assistant Program, the single mother-of-two has been accepted into the University's Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Studies).

Despite the challenge of juggling motherhood with full-time study, she is now more positive about her future than ever before.

Claire started the Teachers Assistant Program in 2006 because she felt it would lead to a flexible career she could manage along with the responsibilities of raising her daughters, Izzy (4) and Frankie (1).

"When another girl on the course told me she had applied for the degree course on a portfolio basis, I decided to do the same thing and within a week I was accepted."

Claire credits the Teachers Assistant Program with inspiring her and hopes her story will encourage other people, especially young mums, to chase their dreams.

ECU's Diploma for Teaching Assistants is a one-year course open to people aged 17 or over who have at least completed Year 10. Students attend approximately one two-day weekend session every three weeks for one year and assessment is based on written and practical assignment work. Admission to the program is based on completion of a competitive written application. For further information email taps@ecu.edu.au

Heathy hobby turns into a healthy career

Working in the mining industry for eight years caused Roger Pegoraro's weight to balloon to 127kg. After re-evaluating a few things, Roger improved his lifestyle and started to lose weight leading him to a keen interest in exercise and nutrition. This lead him to complete a Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT), gaining him entry to the Bachelor of Science (Sports Science) course at ECU. Roger was on his way to turning his healthy new hobby into a career.

Things were going so well that Roger was offered part time work at Andrew Ivey Sports whilst doing his practicum unit in his second year of study. The rewarding job offers him the chance to work with clients from a wide range of backgrounds.

"I have assisted with the strength and conditioning of the Perth Wildcats as well as triathletes, cyclists, golfers, tennis players, track and field athletes, and bodybuilders. I have also worked with clients who have range of issues such as anterior cruciate reconstruction, shoulder reconstruction, osteoporosis, cancer, multiple sclerosis and diabetes," says Roger.

After completing his degree in 2006, Roger has focused his energy on competing in triathlons.

"The highlight of my season so far was finishing the City of Perth Olympic distance triathlon in early February."

Roger is now currently in training for the Bussellton Half Ironman in May with his longer term goal set on Ironman WA this December. He is also completing a Masters in Exercise Physiology at ECU.
