WA Youth Awards 2005

The WA Youth Awards recognise and reward outstanding young Western Australians aged 13 to 25 years.

The Faculty of Business and Law at ECU is proud to be a major sponsor of the Awards, by supporting the Leadership category, which will recognise an individual who has demonstrated leadership and made significant achievements to their field of education, business, government, or community.

Nominating a young person for an award is an opportunity to highlight their strengths and achievements and it's a chance to demonstrate to the wider community the hard work and dedication of young people.

Winners in each category receive a $2,000 cash prize, presented with a trophy and framed certificate at the gala awards presentation evening. The WA Young Person of the Year also receives a return trip for two people to a European destination courtesy of Singapore Airlines. Finalists and winners are listed in The West Australian newspaper and receive two complimentary tickets to the gala awards presentation evening.

Entries close Friday 4 March 2005.

Churchlands to stay open longer

Churchlands campusECU will operate its Churchlands Campus until the end of 2007, a year longer than originally planned.

The University is balancing its final exit to coincide with the completion of future developments at its Joondalup and Mount Lawley Campuses.

Vice-Chancellor Millicent Poole says the redevelopment of Churchlands is part of a strategic plan to consolidate ECU's activities at Joondalup and Mount Lawley in the metropolitan area.

The nursing school will transfer from Churchlands to Joondalup at the end of 2006.

A year later the remaining programs in the Faculty of Business and Law, the International English Centre and the Perth Institute of Business and Technology (PIBT) will move off the campus.

Star Graduate

Michelle ClementsA move to Canberra did not stop Michele Clement from gaining her Master of Business Administration from ECU.

Completing her degree externally, Michele says being able to finish was mostly due to the support provided by ECU lecturers.

“As most of the units were not normally available via correspondence, I was able to liaise with certain lecturers to support my endeavours,” she says. “They provided me with material, interaction and feedback.”

As assistant manager for Venture Capital Programs with AusIndustry in Canberra, Michele overseas two venture capital programs - – the Innovation Investment Fund (IIF) and the Renewable Energy Equity Fund (REEF).

She says her degree complemented the skills she had already developed and provided growth and personal development in other areas.

Michele considers making it in the business world means ‘being able to communicate and having a presence'.

“It is really important that you are able to articulate your ideas and plans to others,” she says.
