ECU has introduced two new computing courses, Bachelor of Computer Science and the Bachelor of Information Technology, in an attempt to help curb a newly recognised shortage of professionals in the Australian IT sector.
This move supports the Australian Computer Society's (ACS) aim of reversing a looming skills shortage in the sector which it reports is suffering from a loss of experienced professionals, a declining interest from tertiary students, a low female participation rate and an aging workforce.
The Bachelor of Computer Science aims to give students a solid grounding in both current and emerging areas of computing and the Bachelor of Information Technology builds on a firm basis of fundamental concepts to prepare students for careers in the Information Technology, Mobile Computing and Computer Security industries.
Both degrees allow students the opportunity to enhance their employability by undertaking supporting studies in areas such as Internetworking (CCNP), Network Administration and Design (MCSE), Computer Science and Records Management.
For more information on these courses, contact the Student Support Officer on (61 8) 9370 6299, email scis.info@ecu.edu.au or visit www.scis.ecu.edu.au/future/courses/Undergraduate/index.aspx. |

Perth 's young cyber game whiz kids are being called on to strut their stuff at the very first Cyber Tournament to be held at Edith Cowan University .
The tournament will be held at ECU's Mount Lawley Campus in August and is a chance for teams of high school students to play computer games in some of best multimedia labs in the state.
Teams should consist of five students who will play off in a nine-week round robin to determine who are Perth 's best cyber gamers.
After the knock out rounds, the final four teams left in the competition will go on to the cyber show down for the title of ECU Cyber Champions.
ECU's School of Communications and Multimedia is calling for entrants from all schools in the metropolitan area with teams of five people aged 15.to 18.
The competition, based on the 3D action game Unreal Tournament 2004 , is designed to give students the opportunity to be involved in an alternative activity and to use their computer gaming skills in a fun and safe environment.
The tournament will also give students an insight into ECU's new Game Design and Culture course, to be introduced in 2006.
Any school wanting to take part in the inaugural ECU Cyber Tournament should visit http://cybertournament.scam.ecu.edu.au or contact Associate Professor Arshad Omari on 08 9370 6459. |

Aaron Rajamoney admits embarking on University study was daunting at first, but looking back he says his course taught him some vital skills.
“I now have some fundamental skills that I would not have obtained anywhere else,” he says.
“Some of those skills include multi-tasking, organisation, administration and the ability to work under pressure.
“I found my course to be very hands on, exciting and fun, particularly in the final years.”
With a Bachelor of Communications majoring in Advertising and Film & Video, Aaron is employed as a Traffic and Production Administrator with an advertising agency called, Bowtell Clarke and Yole .
He says his goal is to gain as much experience in advertising as possible, and expand his career when opportunities arise.
